Join us for an hour-long conversation with educators, community leaders, and students to discuss these pressing topics and explore possible solutions.

Fresno County education news

A judge on Tuesday sided with Immanuel Schools after Fresno County authorities sought a court-ordered injunction to close the school.

On Friday, Dr. Rais Vohra, the county’s interim health director, said he planned to sign a local-level mandate ordering all schools in Fresno County to close until “it’s time to grant waivers.”

Immanuel is not alone as other private schools have also opened under the guise of day camps, despite state orders to keep campuses closed in counties on California’s coronavirus watch list.

Distance learning amid coronavirus

Online learning has been underway in Fresno-area schools for the past two weeks now. Superintendent Bob Nelson said, “it absolutely has not been perfect,” and there were many connectivity issues.

But he also said parents and students are doing well despite the challenges.

California’s digital divide

Schools are working to ensure every student can log in for class. In Fresno County, school districts received funding from the CARES act to help buy tools like hotspots and learning devices.

The Ed Lab is working on a story mapping what parts of Fresno have access to the Internet and where our “digital deserts” are located. Does your student need Internet access? Did you receive a WiFi hotspot or learning device? Let us know in our survey!
