Clovis Unified teacher named finalist in national competition

Julie McGough, a teacher at Clovis Unified's Valley Oak Elementary School, has been named a state finalist for a prestigious national teaching award.

McGough, a first/second grade combination class teacher, has been nominated for the 2014 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. the state Department of Education announced Tuesday.

McGough has been teaching for 16 years, with five of those being at Valley Oak.

She incorporates technology into her classroom in a variety of ways. With the help of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, her students raised salmon in the classroom. Her students shared their experiences through blogs with families, the school community and pen pals in Quito, Ecuador.

McGough also collaborates with teachers and parents to write curriculum, is an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Fresno, and serves as a committee member of the National Science Teacher Association Committee on Preschool Elementary Science Teaching.
