Death of Merced teacher still a mystery

There are no new leads in the death of a Merced elementary school teacher who was found Thursday morning floating in her backyard pool, a Merced Police Department spokesman said.

The body of Diane Romero had stab wounds. Her husband, Rudy Romero, was found stabbed and in critical condition in the couple's Tioga Court backyard.

An autopsy on Diane Romero, who taught third grade at Peterson Elementary School in Merced for 13 years, was performed Friday.

Rudy Romero, who is still in the hospital, is a bus driver for the Merced Union High School District. There are two high school-aged sons in the Romero family.
