Fresno pioneer's descendant to meet students

A Hollywood screen writer, a relative of a Fresno pioneer, will be in town today to meet a group of eighth-grade students who have been studying her ancestor.

Leslie Dixon, whose movie credits include "Hairspray," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Pay It Forward," will join relatives and Valley Prep Charter School students at 4 p.m. in a ceremony at the Dixon family burial site at Mountain View Cemetery.

Dixon is the great-granddaughter of Harry St. John Dixon, who moved from Mississippi to Central California in 1868, according to the Fresno Historical Society. Dixon was Fresno County clerk in the 1870s, creator of the first county map and the first Fresno city attorney in 1885, the society said.

The Valley Prep students traveled to Mississippi to learn more about Dixon’s roots.
