Fresno County sheriff’s detectives and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating the theft of an estimated 30 handguns taken overnight from a gunstore in the Clovis area.
The burglary occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday , according to sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti. The thieves entered the store in the 4000 block of Clovis Avenue through the roof and escaped the the same way. Botti said the weapons were not secured in a safe. He said that there is no requirement that the guns be put in a safe, although Sheriff Margaret Mims encourages all gun owners to secure their firearms when they are not in use.
The bureau is working with the owners of the gun store to gather an inventory of the weapons taken along with their serial numbers.
Botti said the owners were in “disbelief” that their story was targeted by burglars, but were cooperating with investigators. He added that investigators were concerned about the firearms hitting the street.
Anyone with information about the stolen weapons is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.
