One robber is dead after an Easton store clerk and two thieves exchanged gunfire Tuesday night, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
The dead robber was identified Wednesday by the sheriff’s office as 17-year-old Isaac Garcia of Fresno. His alleged accomplice was still on the loose. He is described as Hispanic in his late teens to early 20s, 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing 170 to 190 pounds.
Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti described what investigators have learned about the shooting:
About 10:50 p.m., Garcia and his accomplice opened the door to the Jiffy Food Stop store on Elm Avenue just north of Lincoln Avenue and pointed guns at the store clerk, who was behind the counter just inside the door. There were customers inside the store.
The clerk drew a gun, and one of the robbers fired a shot, missing the clerk. From behind the counter, the clerk returned fire and the robbers retreated.
No one inside the store was hurt. Deputies found Garcia dead outside the store with a gun near his body.
It’s not known how the accomplice got away. At least one deputy sped off in a cruiser south from the store in search of the other robber but soon returned to the crime scene.
Detectives and crime-scene investigators swarmed the store into midmorning Wednesday. The sheriff’s office is asking that anyone who was around the store during the shooting or has since heard conversations about the robbery attempt to call the sheriff’s dispatch at 559-600-3111 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP (7867).
