Fresno police say Alejandro Rosales Garcia was out of jail only a few minutes Friday morning when he punched and kicked a woman just feet from the front steps of the downtown jail.

Garcia, 38, is now back in custody on new charges of assault and battery following a foot chase.

Fresno County Jail records show that Garcia was released from custody at 10:48 a.m. Police Lt. Joe Gomez said he was doing time for misdemeanor vandalism, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

Soon after Garcia left the jail, at M and Fresno streets, police were sent to check a report that he was pushing people and shouting. When they arrived, they found an injured woman who needed an ambulance.

Gomez said that officers learned Garcia said something to the woman in English before the attack, but she spoke only Spanish. He then shouted and punched her, knocking her to the ground.

Garcia then reportedly threatened a male bystander who retreated, then knocked the original victim to the ground again and kicked her twice in the stomach.

Then Garcia ran east on Fresno Street. He was captured near Divisadero and U streets.

The victim was not seriously injured. She did not know Garcia and police do not know why she was singled out for the assault.
