Five Chowchilla men and a teen boy were arrested Thursday in Chowchilla in connection with an ongoing investigation into gang-related shootings in the city, the Chowchilla Police Department said. All five men are suspects in the shootings.
The men face a variety of charges, including possession of a loaded concealed firearm in public. The juvenile, a street gang member, was arrested for participation in a criminal street gang in the 800 block of Humboldt Avenue, which resulted in the schools in the area being locked down for a short time while the arrest was made.
Police arrested Robert Valencia, 22, Tyron Polk, 18, Daniel Allen, 31, Raul Ruiz, 56, and Richard Benavide, 44.
Police Chief David Riviere called for more community involvement.
“What is occurring in our city is not normal or acceptable,” Riviere said. “The only way we are going to address the recent shootings is as a community, together. I urge people to get involved. Start a neighborhood watch, business watch, better yet, a community watch. It is time we all become neighbors again.”
“We are working very diligently to bring an end to the recent violence in our community,” he added.
Anyone with information about the shooting incidents or other criminal activity is asked to call the Chowchilla Police Department at 559-665-8600.
