An Earlimart man who is a known gang member was found guilty Monday in Tulare County Superior Court of attempted murder and carjacking, the District Attorney’s Office said.

The jury also found that Jacinto Magallanes, 21, committed both crimes in connection with a criminal street gang, the office said. He also used a firearm and left the victim permanently paralyzed.

The victim was shot in Earlimart in May 2011 after Magallanes and two others asked for a ride to their apartment, the office said. The victim’s car was taken after he was dragged out of it.

The victim was able to contact Tulare County sheriff’s deputies and later testify at the trial despite bullet fragments in his spine and a diagnosis of permanent quadriplegia, the DA’s office said.

Magallanes’ sentencing is scheduled for April 14, when he faces 40 years to life in state prison.
