Two drivers suffered major injuries after one – suspected of drunken driving – collided with the other as he drove the wrong way on Highway 99 west of Visalia early Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
A call came in about a possible drunken driver headed south on Highway 99 near Avenue 260 shortly before 3 a.m. CHP couldn’t locate the reported vehicle, however. Around 3:15 a.m., another call came in about a similar vehicle traveling south in northbound lanes.
Alfredo Santiago, 25, of Fresno, was driving a Toyota on the wrong side of the highway when he collided head-on with Eric Mendibles, 49, of Clovis, who was driving a Mitsubishi, according to the CHP.
When CHP officers arrived at the scene, both drivers were pinned in their vehicles – each with a broken femur.
Mendibles was taken to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia. Santiago was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno and arrested for suspicion of drunken driving.
