Officers responding to an alert passerby’s call for help thwarted an armed robbery Sunday afternoon in central Fresno, police say.
Sgt. Carlos Frausto said officer Christopher Fern was flagged down by a citizen about 3:15 p.m. near Palm and Belmont avenues and told that the Cali-Beats car audio and car alarm business at H Street and Palm Avenue was being robbed; a man wearing a hoodie and armed with a handgun had pushed a worker inside the shop.
Fern and officer Ricardo Gonzalez called for backup and officers converged. The robber, later identified as Jesus Perez, 34, of Fresno, saw police and first ran back into the business, then tried to run but was caught across the street.
The owner of Cali-Beats and a customer were found bound inside the business. Officers also found a gun apparently left behind by Perez as he ran.
No one was hurt during the robbery, Frausto said. Perez was booked into Fresno County Jail for armed robbery but posted bail early Monday morning.
