Fresno police said Wednesday that two 19-year-old men are in custody in connection with a fatal shooting early Tuesday.
Shawn Lamont Brown and Lachance Larue Thomas were booked on murder charges in the death of Von Randell Correia, 29, who was shot near Shields and Maple avenues just after midnight. Correia died at Community Regional Medical Center.
Lt. Mark Salazar of the department’s Street Violence Section credited a 16-year-veteran of the department for the quick apprehension of the suspects. The officer happened to be across the street from the shooting scene, heard gunfire and saw a car speeding away. The car was pulled over near the Highway 168 onramp at Shields and two men and a woman were detained. The men were later identified as Brown and Thomas. Police found a handgun along the route between the shooting scene and the traffic stop and believe it is connected to the homicide.
Salazar said the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office is waiting for a ballistics report on the handgun before deciding whether to file charges against Brown and Thomas. Earlier, police said it is likely the crime was drug-related, but probably not gang-related.
