Valley DUI checkpoints net six arrests

The Visalia and Fresno police departments set up DUI checkpoints on Friday that led to six arrests.

A checkpoint set up by the Visalia Police Department from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday led to four arrests and 40 traffic tickets.

Sgt. Damon Maurice said two people were arrested for alleged DUI, while two others were taken in on outstanding warrants. A total of 63 vehicles were stopped, and five field sobriety tests were given.

Traffic officers also investigated an alcohol-related crash during the operation, Maurice said.

The Fresno Police Department reported that a checkpoint near Fig Garden Village led to four alleged DUI arrests. Five other vehicles were impounded due to people driving without valid licenses.

Both departments plan to hold additional checkpoints. They are paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
