A 36-year-old man was arrested Saturday after police said he killed his roommate in Mendota.

Officers from the Mendota Police Department were called out to the 200 block of Holmes Avenue around 6:15 p.m. and found 35-year-old John Rangel had been stabbed to death, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Mendota police requested the sheriff’s office to take over the investigation.

A tip was received that the suspect, later identified by deputies as Rafael Rivas, was seen near Lolita and 6th Street. He was tracked down, arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of murder.

Deputies did not comment on a possible motive for the violence.
