Man strikes two police vehicles, leads high-speed chase through Sanger, police say

A man was arrested after authorities said he struck two police vehicles and led officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon in the Sanger area.

Sanger Police Cpl. Manuel Duran Jr. said officers were called to the 2400 block of 7th Street for reports of a disturbance.

And when they arrived, Luis Cantu backed up a blue Chevy Tahoe and struck a police cruiser with officers inside, according to Duran.

The driver pulled forward and struck another cruiser before leading officers on a high-speed chase, police said.

Officers said Cantu was driving erratically and at one point reached speeds of 100 mph while heading from Sanger to Reedley.

Officers eventually ended their pursuit due to dangerous conditions.

But a California Highway Patrol helicopter later spotted the Tahoe as it headed back to Sanger near Highway 180 and Academy Avenue.

Officers began to pursue the vehicle again through Sanger. The driver was blocked in by vehicles at an intersection at Academy Avenue and 5th Street.

Cantu was taken into custody and faces possible charges of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, hit-and-run, and felony pursuit, officers said.

Duran said this incident is still under investigation. It is unclear yet if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
