A suspect in the murder of Firebaugh resident Hugo Gonzalez Vargas turned himself in Monday.
Gonzalez Vargas, 33, was identified by the Fresno County Coroner as the man shot to death Thursday near Firebaugh. Cal Fire personnel found Gonzalez Vargas lying on the ground in the 12000 block of North Russell Avenue about 2 a.m.
Francisco Zermeno, 30, turned himself in at Corning Police Department, north of Sacramento. He is being held at Tehama County Jail in Red Bluff while Fresno detectives arrange to have him transported to Fresno County Jail. He will be booked on one count of homicide.
Zermeno had been wanted for questioning about the death of his friend, Gonzalez Vargas. When detectives were unable to find Zermeno, they found out he might be headed toward Washington or Mexico to visit family.
