Woman crossing tracks killed by train near Fresno City College

A 58-year-old woman died Monday after she was struck by a northbound Amtrak train near Fresno City College, police said.

Lt. Joe Gomez said it appears the woman, walking with a cane and crossing the tracks, tried to beat the train.

Witnesses told police the woman was walking east on the north side of Clinton Avenue near College Avenue in central Fresno about 12:30 p.m. when she looked south, apparently saw the approaching train, and tried to cross the tracks.

At least one witness could see the woman was not moving fast enough and he yelled at her to hurry up because the train was coming, Gomez said.

The train clipped the woman, knocking her to ground. She suffered a broken arm, a broken leg and internal injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. She died during surgery, Gomez said late Monday. Her name is being withheld until her family can be notified.
