Fresno shooting leaves one woman critically wounded

Fresno police have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with Thursday’s shooting in downtown Fresno that left one woman critically injured.

Antonio Martinez, who is originally from Sacramento, was booked into Fresno County Jail on Friday on charges of first- and second-degree attempted murder. (An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported Martinez was charged with first- and second-degree murder.) Police said Martinez was dating the victim.

The shooting happened at a home at 49 N. Calaveras St., near Divisadero Street and Dickey Playground. Officers responded to the incident at 11:36 p.m. and found the woman shot in the head. Police said there were several others in the house that had nine makeshift, subdivided rooms where nine people were living. Officers recovered a gun.

Lt. Joe Gomez said the victim, who has not been identified, was not expected to survive.
