Fresno County deputies break up fourth cockfighting event this year

Original story incorrectly said cockfighting was legal in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana. It is illegal in all 50 states.

Fresno County sheriff’s deputies on Sunday broke up the fourth cockfighting event in the two months, this time in the Caruthers area.

Spokesman Tony Botti said the sheriff’s office received a tip about the operation, which was taking place in an almond orchard. The sheriff’s helicopter spotted participants, who fled in about 50 vehicles. Deputies discovered about two dozen dead roosters along with other evidence.

Botti said the all four of the cockfights found this year have taken place on a Sunday. He said spring is a favored time of year for them, before weather becomes too hot for the birds to perform well.
