Man dead in northwest Fresno neighborhood shooting; getaway car captured on video

The victim in a Sunday drive-by shooting at a northwest Fresno neighborhood died Monday afternoon at Community Regional Medical Center, police said.

The man, described in his 20s, was shot shortly after 6 p.m. on Barstow Avenue near Feland Avenue. The man was sitting in his car when he was shot by a suspect in a silver sedan-type car, Lt. Phil Cooley said. The suspect was then seen driving east on Barstow, Cooley said.

The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He died about 4 p.m. Monday.

A 14-year-old boy who witnessed the shooting said he shot a video of the suspect’s vehicle as it left the crime scene.

“I heard the shot,” the witness said. The car “was going, like, really slow, and they didn’t speed off or anything.”

The 14-year-old said he was glad the suspect didn’t see him: “He would have shot me, too.”

The boy turned the video over to investigators. Officers initially said that while the video doesn’t show the car’s license plate, the suspect’s vehicle may have been a gray Lexus. Cooley provided the updated description.

No other suspect information was made available Monday evening. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867.
