A former Exeter police sergeant was sentenced Thursday to 45 days in jail for having sex with a minor in the department’s Explorer program, the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office said.
Jeff Detwiler, 48, was arrested in August, three months after being placed on administrative leave. He was an adviser to the Explorer post and had worked in Exeter for 10 years.
Detwiler was charged was with unlawful sex with someone under 18 and with possession of a controlled substance — steroids. Both charges are misdemeanors. He pleaded guilty, the District Attorney’s Office said.
Superior Court Judge Gary Paden ordered Detwiler to turn himself in April 7 and sentenced him to three years of probation, 100 hours of community service and a $375 fine. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
The victim made a statement at sentencing, and Detwiler apologized to the victim and her family through his attorney, Assistant District Attorney Anthony Fultz said.
