The victim of a gang-related homicide in Avenal has been identified by police as 14-year-old Yovani Hernandez.
The boy was shot to death Tuesday evening. Police are following leads but no arrest has been made, interim Police Chief Russell Stivers said Thursday.
Based on witness accounts, police are investigating the killing as gang-related, he said.
People interviewed by investigators are reluctant to cooperate for fear of gang retaliation, he said. Anyone with information is asked to call detective Kevin Carr at (559) 386-4444.
It’s the city’s first gang-related homicide since October 2012.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, officers heard gunshots coming from the northwest. While on their way to the area, dispatchers received several calls of shots fired in the 300 block of Mono Street.
Officers found the boy on the front porch of a home with several gunshot wounds. They attempted first aid, but he died at the scene.
