Three Exeter gang members are awaiting sentencing after they were found guilty Thursday for attempting to rob an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent.
The three gang members — Gustavo Mendoza, 23, Joel Serrato, 25, and Miguel Villegas, 22 — were planning on buying Oxycodone from an undercover agent in January 2014 and planned to meet with him in a Visalia parking lot that was being watched by other law enforcement officers. Mendoza and Villegas spotted the surveillance before the buy could take place and left, texting the DEA agent minutes later to meet the trio at another location.
The agent arrived at the new location but soon left out of fear that the three gang members, who approached him wearing masks, were going to rob him. Police later arrested the gang members on Highway 198 north of Exeter and found a loaded handgun inside their car.
They were found guilty of multiple robbery and firearm-related charges, including conspiracy to commit a gang-related robbery.
They will be sentenced Feb. 24 in Tulare County Superior Court.
