1,500 teens party; shots fired

Fresno police said Sunday more than 1,500 teenagers were at a party in a downtown Fresno warehouse when shots were fired Saturday night.

No one was injured, said Lt. Mike Doyle, who said officers were amazed at the size of the party that apparently was expanded through the use of MySpace and text messages.

Police arrived at 11:45 p.m. Saturday and emptied the abandoned building at Fresno Street and Belmont Avenue. Hundreds of young people poured out of the party into the intersection where fights began to break out.

"There were gang-related fights," Doyle said.

Police closed down the intersection and began finding ways to get the youngsters home, Doyle said. Many of the teenagers had been dropped off by their parents, police said.

Doyle said someone had been charging an $8 admission at the door. Authorities are investigating possible charges against that person. No name was made public Sunday.

Fire

Blaze damages Fowler home

A fire caused $30,000 in damage to a home in Fowler early Sunday, but the occupants escaped unharmed, Cal Fire officials said.

The fire occurred on the 8100 block of South Temperance Avenue shortly after midnight, according to Cal Fire.

A woman in the home discovered the fire in the kitchen area shortly after midnight and alerted her father and daughter to get out of the house, Cal Fire officials said. The home did not have working smoke detectors.

The fire began at the exterior of the home where a propane water heater had been installed improperly, Cal Fire said.

Firefighters contained the blaze in about 20 minutes, saving most of the home and its contents, Cal Fire said.

"Fortunately, the family was able to escape. If they had all been asleep, this very well could have resulted in at least one death," fire investigator Eric Watkins said.

The American Red Cross assisted the family with a place to stay.
