Drive-by victim is Fresno's 32nd homicide of year

A 24-year-old man who was outside his Fresno home with friends was fatally shot early Sunday when someone in a vehicle fired at him, police said.

Saul Herrera died at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, according to the Fresno County Coroner's Office.

Herrera is the 32nd person slain this year, Fresno police said. At this same time last year, there were 24 homicides in Fresno.

Fresno police officers responded to a shooting on the 2600 block of E. Floradora Avenue at 1:18 a.m. Police found the victim in the front yard of the home.

Police said words were exchanged between a gathering of people at the victim's home and a separate crowd.

A suspect in a vehicle fired at the victim and then fled.

Police said the motive is unknown and it appears it was an isolated incident.

Neighbor Debby Vargas, 43, said the victim's wife is 31/2 months pregnant. They have two sons and a daughter, Vargas said.

Vargas' aunt, Charlotte Vargas, 80, said she heard four shots fired early in the morning.

She said Herrera "was a nice boy. He was very close to his family and kids. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time."

The Fresno Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact detective Richard Tacadena at (559) 621-2448 or anonymously at (559) 498-7867.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
