Madera police have arrested a man in connection with the gang-related shooting death of a teenager, police said Tuesday.

Anthony Salvatierra, 21, was arrested about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and committing an act for the benefit of a street gang.

Police say he is responsible for the death of his friend Isaiah McGuire, 16, of Madera who died Sunday after being shot in an alleyway near A and Sixth streets.

Madera police said McGuire was not the intended target. McGuire and Salvatierra were in the same Norteno gang, and Salvatierra had driven McGuire to a gang meeting in the alleyway for a discussion about gang politics, police said.

At least six people were there when a dispute broke out, said Lt. Gino Chiaramonte.

Salvatierra pulled out a gun and opened fire. Three bullets hit a carport but one hit McGuire. Salvatierra drove him to a hospital but then left McGuire and drove off.

Police viewed video surveillance images and found the suspect’s vehicle parked at an apartment building. They staked out the area and when Salvatierra got in the car and drove off, police stopped it at gunpoint.

Salvatierra admitted being at the alleyway and going to the hospital, police said. He might be arraigned Thursday.

Police are still investigating. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Madera police at 559-675-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP. Reports can be anonymous.

This is the third homicide in Madera this year.
