A woman was hospitalized after she was shot by Lemoore police as she ran toward a theft victim with a large butcher knife in her hand and refused to drop it, the Lemoore Police Department said Sunday.
The incident began about 7 p.m. Saturday when police were called to the 800 block of Vine Street for a welfare check and reported theft of a cellphone. The victim reported the ex-girlfriend was the alleged thief. Minutes later, the suspect returned, and when police tried to pull her over she led officers on a chase through area roads and Highway 198 before returning to Vine Street.
The woman got out of the car with a large butcher knife and ran from officers toward the victim, holding the knife in a threatening manner, police said. Officers ordered her to drop it, and tried to stop her with a K-9 and an electronic control device to no avail. That's when an officer shot her.
The woman was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital, the department said.
Kings County Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave as is customary in such shootings.
