At least five people, and possibly six, were shot late Tuesday night in southwest Fresno after a confrontation between Hispanic and Asian gangs, police say.
The shooting took place about 11:38 p.m. at Mariposa and A streets and officers were alerted by the ShotSpotter system.
At the scene, officers found wounded juveniles and learned that other victims were were dropped off at Community Regional Medical Center. Wounds included injuries to the back of the head, chest, stomach, elbow and legs of the victims. All the victims are reported in stable condition.
Lt. Dave Madrigal said “some sort of confrontation” began after one group on foot encountered a second group in at least one vehicle. Both groups began firing.

Madrigal said one victim had a head injury which may have been caused by a bullet. Another person was pistol whipped.
The lieutenant said investigators often have difficulty in such cases because the victims often don’t want to cooperate.
