A 20-year-old man was booked into Fresno County Jail on multiple charges of felony child abuse involving a 6-month-old child that died Friday.
The child was hurt on Wednesday, Fresno police reported. Emergency Medical Services staff went to a home on a call for an “unresponsive” infant. The infant was given CPR and taken to Community Regional Medical Center suffering from traumatic injuries.
Police went to the hospital, where the child was in grave condition. The child died Friday. An autopsy is pending.
Homicide detectives learned that the child was being watched by the mother’s boyfriend prior to the medical-aid call. The boyfriend, identified as Ozvaldo Tejada, is the mother’s boyfriend but not the child’s biological father, police said.
Charges against Osvaldo Tejada include assault by means likely to cause death, for which bail is set at $625,000. Other charges include endangering or causing physical or mental injury to a child.
Tejada was arrested Thursday by Fresno police and booked into Fresno County Jail.
The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information can call Fresno police homicide detectives David Fenstermaker at 559-621-2441 or Victor Miranda at 559-621-2452 or information can be offered anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
