A 24-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting early Thursday near downtown Fresno, police reported.
The violence took place on Fresno Street between McKenzie and Illinois avenues at 2:20 a.m., according to Lt. Rob Beckwith. Arriving officers, alerted by the department’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, found a 24-year-old man lying in the street. He had been shot at least once, and police found a firearm nearby. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. Police blocked Fresno Street between the two cross streets for several hours while detectives investigated the shooting.
Beckwith said it was not immediately known whether the shooting was gang-related, but that is under investigation.
