A 20-year-old man is in custody after biting a man in the ear when he was caught trying to burglarize a home in central Fresno on Thursday.
Lt. Stephen Viveros said a homeowner was having dinner at a restaurant around 6 p.m. when she received a security alert on her phone from a home surveillance system that someone had broken into her house. She rushed home and found her neighbor looking into her home near Dayton and West avenues.
Viveros said police were called to the home near Dayton and West avenues after the woman and her neighbor noticed activity inside. Before officers arrived, the woman and her neighbor opened the garage door and found the suspect with a knife inside. They tried to hold him down until police arrived.
During the fight, the woman’s neighbor was bitten in the ear, causing a puncture wound. The homeowner also complained of pain as a result of the fight, Viveros said.
Viveros said the woman reported her TV was missing. Police have not determined how the TV went missing.
Viveros said the man will face charges of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon (the knife) and mayhem (for biting the neighbor’s ear).
Viveros said the suspect did not use the knife, but warns people against approaching crime suspects before police arrive.
He said, “That’s what we are trained for.”
