A Fresno man is in custody after Fresno police said he slashed the throat, face and chest of a 63-year-old woman with a box cutter in central Fresno on Monday.
Officers were dispatched at 2:34 p.m to the Stop-N-Go at Clinton and West avenues about a man slashing a woman with a razor.
When the first officer arrived, he could see the suspect struggling with the victim. He still had a box cutter in his hand, and it was covered in blood, police said.
The officer pulled his firearm and ordered the man to drop the box cutter, which he did.
Abel Nunez, 34, was taken into custody.
Nunez allegedly used the box cutter to slice the victim in the neck multiple times, police said. He also sliced the right side of her face from her ear to her chin, and he sliced her across the chest.
The victim was bleeding profusely from her neck and face, police said.
The victim was conscious, breathing, and talkative while officers were with her at the scene. Her entire T-shirt was soaked with blood, police said.
She told police she was in the parking lot when Nunez approached. He asked her a question about renewing a driver’s license and apparently became upset when the victim explained how it could be done. Nunez pulled the box cutter from his pocket and attacked her. The victim tried to defend herself but could not escape.
She was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and went into surgery. She is currently listed in serious condition, police said.
Nunez is on felony probation for assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, police said. He was booked into Fresno County Jail on charges of attempted murder and felony probation violation.
