Sports briefs: Sidekicks suffer 1st loss

The Clovis Sidekicks, a second-year Women's Premier Soccer League club, dropped their first game of the season 1-0 to the North Bay FC Wave on Sunday in Larkspur.

The Sidekicks (2-1 overall, 0-1 in the Pacific North Division) held the Wave scoreless into the 87th minute.

Boxers score victories

Valley boxers Jose Ramirez and Michael Ruiz Jr. each scored weekend victories.

Ramirez, one of the nation's top amateurs from Avenal, defeated Ulises Soriano by unanimous decision Saturday at the USA Boxing Central Regional Championships in Fresno.

Ramirez, the top-ranked 132-pounder in the country, is preparing for the national championships in June.

Ruiz, a bantamweight from Fresno, avenged the only blemish on his pro record Friday in Reno with a unanimous six-round decision over Jonathan Alcantar of Novato. The judges scored it 62-54, 62-54, 59-55 for Ruiz (8-0-1), who fought Alcantar to a draw in their previous bout Nov. 27, 2010.

Soccer: The Fresno Fuego, despite a 4-0 record in qualifying, was denied its first spot in the U.S. Open Cup since 2003 after Ventura defeated Southern California on Saturday and advanced to the tournament on goal differential.

Motor sports: Elliot Stjerne won the 50-lap LunkerDaddy late model race Saturday during the Smokey Hanoian Classic at Madera Speedway.
