Softball playoff highlights from May 19

Freshman Rachel Rodriguez pitched a three-hitter – striking out four with no walks – to lead No. 7 Central to a 2-0 upset of No. 2 and two-year reigning Division I finalist Buchanan. Rodriguez never reached a three-ball count on any batter and allowed just one ball out of the infield as the Grizzlies advanced to the semifinals Tuesday at No. 3 El Diamante. "She pitched lights-out against a very experienced Buchanan team," Central coach Scott Gorton said. "She was amazing. She controlled the game." The Grizzlies scored the only runs they would need in the fourth inning as Robyn Alvara hit an RBI double and later scored on an error.

Carissa McMillon's five-hitter and Lexus Garcia's four RBIs led No. 4 Madera past No. 5 Clovis 7-0 in D-I.

Danielle Emerson had three hits, Raeleen Torres tossed an eight-hitter with eight strikeouts and No. 4 Monache got past No. 5 North 6-3 to set up a date at No. 1 Frontier in the D-II semis. North's Brenna Moss, headed to play at Fresno State, went 2 for 3 to set a state record of 284 career hits.

Hannah Harger singled in Jessica Heffley from third in the bottom of the eighth, as two-time defending champ and No. 4 Hanford West outlasted No. 5 Wasco 9-8 in D-III.

Jordan Yates went 3 for 3 and was the winning pitcher, and Desiree Ramirez was 4 of 4 with a home run and three RBIs as No. 3 Kerman downed No. 11 Tehachapi 9-2 in D-III.

Marina Felipe pitched a seven-hitter and drove in two runs, as No. 1 McFarland took out defending champion and No. 4 Kings Christian 6-2 to reach the D-VI final against No. 3 Laton. The Mustangs' Sydnee Cisneros threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 13-0 upset of No. 2 Mendota.
