Clovis West gets top D-I boys tennis seed

Clovis West, which is unbeaten against section opposition, was given the No. 1 seed for the D-I boys tennis team playoffs.

Tehachapi (D-II), Kingsburg (D-III), Bakersfield Christian (D-IV), Arvin (D-V) and Strathmore (D-VI) also were awarded top seeds in their respective divisions for the postseason, which begins today.

The Eagles, who have won the past two D-I titles, received a first-round bye and await the No. 8 Stockdale-No. 9 Clovis winner for a quarterfinal match Friday. Liberty-Bakersfield drew the No. 2 seed, with last season's runner-up, Buchanan, the third seed.

In D-II, 2010 runner-up El Diamante was promoted to D-I, one of four finalists bumped up a division through the section's competitive equity realignment process.

The finals are set for May 24 in divisions I, IV and V, while championship matches in divisions II and III are scheduled for May 18.

A pair of defending champions, El Diamante's Ryan Andrada and Clovis West's Stefan Loop, received No. 1 seeds for the individual tournament, which begins Saturday in Visalia.

Andrada, who upset last season's No. 1 seed and teammate Josh Lorentzen for the singles title, was given the No. 1 seed this year.

Andrada's strongest competition for the No. 1 seed, Clovis West freshman Billy Grifith, had to withdraw from the event because he has a national tournament to play in this weekend.

Loop, who teamed with Vincent Paganetti to win the doubles title last season, will chase a second straight doubles crown this season as the top seed along with Adam Beach.
