Baseball and softball highlights April 5


Eighth-ranked Clovis North, down 2-1 with two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the eighth, had two batters hit by pitches before Chris Mariscal doubled them both home with a one-hopper by third base and down the line to beat No. 5 Clovis West in the Tri-River Athletic Conference. Nick McCallaster had hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the inning for the Golden Eagles, who whipped the Broncos 10-1 in the first round but have lost three straight. Michael Tittle broke up a no-hitter by Clovis West's Josh Medeles with a single leading off the seventh. And Tittle ended up scoring on a wild pitch to send it into extra innings. Tittle also pitched the first five innings, giving up one run and striking out seven. Medeles struck out 10 in seven innings.

Dominic Topoozian (6-0) pitched five strong innings, Jason Gonzalez had a homer and three RBIs and Christian Parra drove in three runs with three hits in No. 1 Buchanan's 12-4 rout of No. 4 Central in the TRAC. The Bears are ranked second in the state by Cal-Hi Sports behind Edison-Huntington Beach.

Winning pitcher Kevin Magill helped himself with two RBIs as D-IV No. 3 Fowler blanked D-V No. 3 Caruthers 3-0 in a West Sequoia League opener.

Devin White pitched a nine-hitter, hit two doubles and drove in two runs to help carry D-III No. 3 Fresno past McLane 6-5 in the North Yosemite League. Eduardo Torres and Omar Hernandez both hit homers for the Highlanders.


Natalie Rendon threw a four-hitter and Bailey O'Dell and Samantha Mendoza both drove in two runs to lift No. 4 Buchanan past No. 8 Central 5-0 in a TRAC opener.

Carrisa McMillow pitched a three-hitter and Veronica Solis had two homers among her three hits and five RBIs to power Madera past Memorial 12-0 in the County/Metro Athletic Conference.

Kassidy Walker beat the throw home on Alissa Gutterrez's grounder for the winner in the bottom of the seventh to give No. 5 Clovis a 3-2 victory over Clovis East in the TRAC.
