THE BUZZ

Top-ranked Stockdale, which has outscored opponents 64-4 behind ace pitcher Justine Vela, opened Southwest Yosemite League play with wins over Frontier (1-0) and Centennial (11-1).

Clovis West and Clovis switch places this week in the rankings based on the strength of the Golden Eagles' sweep of Bullard (a team the Cougars split with.)

Joining the Top 10 is Kingsburg, which is riding an eight-game winning streak led by freshman Savanna Sieger, who is 10-2 with a 0.65 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 65 innings while also knocking in a team-leading 13 runs.

Liberty-Madera Ranchos looks like the favorite again in Division V – where it has won the past two Central Section titles – despite losing four senior starters from last season, including two now playing in college. Hawks coach Bob Barber is starting five sophomores, including pitchers Hannah Shevenell and Katie Pia. Shevenell struck out a school-record 15 in a 7-3 win over Memorial last Thursday. "I'm tickled with the talent," Barber said. "But it's a younger team." A big small-schools clash is set for 4 p.m. Friday, when Liberty travels to Riverdale for a doubleheader. The Cowgirls, who have lost to Liberty in the past two D-V finals, are led by three-year starting pitcher Elizabeth Carreiro, who beat previous D-IV No. 1 Washington 2-1 last week. "I want to be tested," Riverdale coach Bryan Close said. "Hopefully we'll come out and play tough."
