Justine Vela helped erase any doubt about which team should occupy the No. 1 spot in The Bee's Central Section Top 10 with her dominating performance for Stockdale at the Buchanan Preseason Tournament. Vela led the Mustangs to a 5-0 record while winning the title of the 12-team, large schools division, striking out 80 batters in the process. Vela struck out 18 during a 2-0 victory over Buchanan in the final, and 17 in six innings during a 4-0 semifinal win over Hanford West. Quite the impressive performance considering the Bears and Huskies are two of the top hitting teams in the section, and the switch to pitching from 43 feet rather than the previous 40 feet was supposed to keep pitchers from blowing the ball by hitters. "Her performance was as good as I've ever seen from anyone. She was phenomenal," Buchanan coach Dean Gregory said. "Her big thing is her ball moves. The extra 3 feet, all that does is give it more time to move."

Despite having to replace four-year pitcher Emily Cloyes off her Division II title-winning team from last season, Lemoore coach Dionne Ewing is confident that the Tigers will be in the mix again this year behind sophomore Kayla Gomness and freshman Adele Leuma. "They are getting more and more confident every game," Ewing said of her young pitchers.
