Baseball and softball highlights from March 9


Jessica Heffley had three hits in two of Hanford West's three games as the Huskies emerged 3-0 from Pool C at the Buchanan Preseason Tournament with wins over Liberty- Madera Ranchos (12-1), Clovis East (9-0) and Central (5-4).


Carlos Salazar pitched a one-hitter in his first varsity start and pinch runner Aaron Rodriguez scored on a throwing error in the sixth as Kerman edged Hanford West 1-0 at the Central Classic. Tanner Irwin pitched a one-hitter for the Huskies.

Shane Shaubach's two-out RBI single capped a four-run bottom of the seventh as Madera defeated Merced 5-4 at the Coca-Cola Classic. The Coyotes also received singles from Joe Contreras, Justin Bowles and James Brager and a two-run double from Brian Rubalcaba in the inning.

Kody Batesole's RBI single in the sixth brought in the only run and Dominic Topoozian struck out 10 as top-ranked Buchanan (7-1) edged Redwood 1-0 at the Coca-Cola Classic. In addition to the Bears, the Tri-River Athletic Conference is a collective 41-4, including Clovis (7-1), Clovis North (7-1), Clovis West (7-0), Clovis East (7-1) and Central (6-0).

Deondre Howard struck out seven while pitching a complete game and added three singles and three runs as Edison beat Tulare Western 6-3 at the Coca-Cola Classic.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Selma had two straight players hit by a pitches to beat Dos Palos 7-6 at the Chowchilla Tournament. James Berry had three doubles. Christian Escalante drove in three for the Broncos.

Connor West powered Hanford to a 7-1 win against Reedley at the Central Tournament. West had seven strikeouts in six innings and went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer.
