Baseball highlights from Feb. 23


Defending D-I champion Buchanan – also No. 1 in The Bee's preseason rankings – beat Frontier 2-1 to split a season-opening doubleheader. Dominic Topoozian earned the win, and Seth Moranda and Pat Sylvia both drove in runs. Frontier, ranked No. 7, won the opener 8-3 as Shane Sudsbury went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Northern Colorado-bound right-hander Eian Raeber – last season's West Yosemite League Pitcher of the Year – struck out seven in four innings and went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Michael Hostetler pitched three innings of one-hit ball for the save as Hanford West beat Hoover 6-2 in a season opener for both teams. The Huskies are ranked second in D-III.

Boo Massey went 3 for 4 with a homer and six RBIs and No. 4 Clovis swept No. 6 Stockdale 21-7 and 5-4 in an opening doubleheader. Jimmy Jurado and Jordan Magurean picked up the wins.
