Basketball playoff highlights from Feb. 22


Rebecca Baker added 13 rebounds to her team-high 14 points, and five blocks as No. 10 El Diamante beat No. 7 Tulare Western 59-38 in the opening round of the Central Section Division II playoffs. The Miners advance to face No. 2 Clovis North.

Niah Simmons (14 points) helped turn the tide in No. 9 Buchanan's 64-57 win over No. 8 Liberty-Bakersfield in D-I, tallying six steals during the third quarter. The Bears advance to face top-seeded Hanford in a quarterfinal Thursday.

Katelyn Maurer scored 14 points, Charnae Edmonds 13 and No. 7 Exeter won a free-throw-shooting duel to hold off No. 10 McFarland 52-47 in D-IV. Next for the Monarchs is No. 2 Memorial.

No. 9 Washington beat No. 8 Caruthers 61-33 in D-IV to reverse a 57-26 loss to the Blue Raiders in December. Alexis Blue, who scored eight in that loss, led the Panthers with 24. Washington now takes on top-seeded Sierra. The Chieftains swept the Panthers in North Sequoia League play.

Christina Castro had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Raquel Findley 11 points and 10 assists as No. 6 Lindsay beat No. 11 Chowchilla 75-31 in D-IV. The Cardinals next will face No. 3 Strathmore.
