Wrestling giants converge at Doc Buchanan Invitational

  • When/where: Today and Saturday at Clovis High. Wrestling begins today at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals set for about 4 p.m. Saturday's action also begins at 9 a.m., followed by semifinals at 10 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
  • Admission: $5 for adults and $3 for students/children for each of three sessions -- all day Friday; Saturday morning; and Saturday's finals.
    • Best ever? With the state's top seven ranked teams, seven No. 1 wrestlers, four state champions and another from Nevada, the field is considered the best in the event's 34-year history. A total of 74 schools and 421 wrestlers have entered.
      • State team rankings: Representing the top seven, according to TCW State Rankings, will be No. 1 and defending state champion Bakersfield, No. 2 and a record eight-time state titlist Clovis, No. 3 and consecutive state runner-up Selma, No. 4 Oakdale, No. 5 Lemoore, No. 6 De La Salle-Concord and No. 7 Gilroy. Other Central Section teams competing ranked in the top 20 are No. 10 Clovis West, No. 11 Porterville, No. 15 Clovis North, No. 16 Clovis East and No. 19 Central.
  • They're golden: State champions entered are Selma's Alex Cisneros (125) and Nick Pena (140), Oakdale's David Ferry (145), Las Vegas' Napoleon Anciete (152) and Bakersfield's Bryce Hammond (160).
