Basketball highlights from Jan. 4


Keyora Wharry scored 21 points to lead Edison to a 72-44 win over Clovis North and a date with Buchanan in today's championship game of the Buchanan New Year's Classic. Heidi Johnson and Niah Simmons each scored 10 in the Bears' 51-31 win over Memorial to put Buchanan in the final.

Samantha Mendoza finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals to lead Washington to a 69-58 win over Mendota.

Fresno Christian's Brandi Thompson made a layup with 30 seconds left to take the lead and a half-court heave from Bakersfield Christian's Brittany Smith fell short, giving Fresno Christian a 33-31 win.


Shaquille Moore scored 19 as Madera South beat Washington 50-48 in overtime at the Sanger Classic. Donnell Vercher scored 24 points as Clovis knocked off El Diamante 45-37 in a nonleague contest.

Lance Van Grouw had 26 points, six assists and five steals and Grant Verhoeven 24 points and 11 rebounds as Central Valley Christian opened Central Sequoia League play with an 82-44 victory over Coalinga.

Jerry Warren scored nine of his 11 points in the second quarter when Dos Palos enjoyed a 20-10 edge en route to a 53-37 victory on day 2 of the Tranquillity Invitational.

Cooper Belmont hit five 3-pointers but it wasn't enough as Sierra overpowered Fresno Christian 84-65.

Josue Salaam hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points as Hanford West beat Lemoore 65-54 to start West Yosemite League play.

Will Nelson scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Mt. Whitney won its WYL opener against Golden West 55-42.

Hanford's Brad Simas recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Bullpups beat Redwood 73-41 in the WYL.
