Basketball highlights from Dec. 30

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tournament Most Valuable Player Denzel Johnson scored 10 of his 17 points and T.J. Jackson had nine of his 14 as Clovis West formed a 23-10 third-quarter run that proved decisive in a 52-40 conquest of Arlington-Riverside for the championship of the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.

Jon Brinson scored 15 points and all-tourney picks Kevin Bailey and Antwoun Whitfield added 13 apiece as Clovis East rebounded from an 84-83 overtime loss to Clovis in Wednesday's semifinals to beat Royal-Simi Valley 68-56 for third place at the Clovis Elks.

Oscar Iniguez scored 18 points as Parlier defeated Laton 59-39 for the Laton Holiday Tournament title. Iniguez was named all-tournament and teammate Rudy Maldonado was named MVP.

Vinson Johnson scored nine of his 17 points in the first quarter as Monache raced to a 24-11 lead before escaping with a 62-58 win over Tulare Western for the championship of the 60th Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational at Mt. Whitney. Daniel Hernandez and Mark Pascual each scored 12 points for the Marauders, who made 47.2% of their shots (25-of-53) compared with the Mustangs' 31.5% (17-of-54).

William Stallworth closed a four-game, 112-point tourney with 31 and had 11 rebounds as Tulare defeated Delano 74-68 for third at the Polly.

Tournament MVP Tyler Muzzy scored 14 points as Dinuba rallied from a 16-9 first-quarter deficit to defeat Exeter 48-41 for the Woodlake Tournament title.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

All-tournament selection Heidi Johnson's 28 points powered Buchanan past Weston Ranch-Stockton 60-53 in the consolation championship of the West Coast Jamboree's Sapphire Division.

Tulare's Kieysha Reedom was named MVP and teammates Karishma Bhakta and Marayne Coleman also made all-tournament as the Redskins beat Merced 56-43 for the championship of the Tulare Mid-Winter Showcase. Coleman had a game-high 18 points.
