Basketball highlights from Dec. 27

BOYS BASKETBALL

Alex Fertig, a junior guard who helped lead Buchanan into that D-I final against Clovis East, twice scored 22 points as Buchanan swept Memorial (71-55) and Hanford (83-42) at the Clovis Elks.

Tulare's William Stallworth, coming off an MVP performance at the Tulare Holiday Classic, scored 18 of his game-high 30 points in the second half as the 10-0 Redskins pulled away and beat Bakersfield Christian 68-52 in the opening round of the Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational in Visalia. The tournament is at Mt. Whitney and Redwood highs.

Miguel Perez went 13 of 17 from the field in scoring 29 points as Monache topped Lemoore 68-64 at the Polly.

Akili Arnold and Deandre Dickson scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the first half as Washington broke out to a 19-point lead en route to a 66-53 win over Golden West at the Polly. Austin Peltzer finished with 23 in a losing cause. Damone Mayberry's 18 were Washington's game-high.

Michael Mori was 4 of 4 on 3-pointers and 8 of 8 on free throws while scoring 24 points in El Diamante's 61-51 Polly win over Garces.

Antwoun Whitfield scored 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter to help Clovis East pull away from Hoover for an 85-62 win at the Clovis Elks Christmas Classic. Then, a few hours later, Kevin Bailey scored 25 points to complete a 47-point day as the Timberwolves -- defending section Division I champions -- defeated Stockdale 85-72.

Korey Anderson, a 6-7 center having a big year after missing half his junior season with a shoulder injury, totaled 40 points as host Clovis defeated Edison 58-47 and East Bakersfield 64-61 at the Clovis Elks.

Royal-Simi Valley scored six of its eight overtime points at the free-throw line in holding off Bullard 84-83 at the Clovis Elks. Jajuan Hammond scored 22 in a defeat for the Knights, 17 in the first half.

Grant Verhoeven had 33 points and 18 rebounds as Central Valley Christian beat Fremont-Los Angeles 63-59 to open the Modesto Christian Holiday Hoops Classic. Justin Lea hit 7 of 9 free throws en route to a game-high 18 points as Central beat Canoga Park 65-28.

Denzel Johnson scored 16 points as Clovis West doubled up Burroughs-Burbank 66-33 at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.

Tyler Muzzy had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Dinuba past Roosevelt 61-56 at the Woodlake Tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Clovis East built a 33-point first half lead and rode Lindsay Juarez's 19 points to a 68-30 win over Rodriguez-Fairfield at the West Coast Jamboree. Bayli McClard scored 27 points and Hanford held off Sacramento's fourth-quarter charge for a 73-69 win.
