Fall sports roundup 11/2

GIRLS TENNIS HIGHLIGHTS

Amanda Matthews rolled 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles as Liberty-Madera Ranchos bolted to a 4-1 lead, and then teamed with fellow junior Nicole Ray for a 6-1, 6-3 doubles clincher as the third-seeded Hawks defeated No. 4 Strathmore 5-4 for the Central Section Division V title.

It was Liberty's first section girls tennis championship in the eight-year history of the program launched by coach Greg Ruland. And he pulled it off with but one senior among his top eight players. "Strathmore only has one senior, also, so it could be interesting the next couple years," he said.

Eryn Piearcy won 6-2, 6-0 in No. 5 singles and joined Amanda Bukillica for a 6-0, 6-1 rout in No. 3 doubles as top-seeded Clovis West earned a D-I championship rematch with No. 2 Buchanan by escaping 5-4 at home against No. 4 Garces. The Eagles and Bears will play at Clovis West at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
