Injured player shows improvement

Clovis North High football player John Lara showed some improvement Sunday, three days after he was critically injured in a junior varsity game.

Lara is responding to pain and showed reduced swelling around his face, according to a Web page set up at CaringBridge.org to update the community on his condition. Several of Lara's teammates also visited him in the intensive care unit.

DeShane's goal nets win for 'Dogs

Bradlee DeShane's goal in the fourth minute of overtime lifted the Fresno State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Idaho as the Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a five-game unbeaten streak.

The Bulldogs (7-8-4 overall) finished sixth in the Western Athletic Conference at 3-3-2 heading into the conference tournament starting Thursday in Ruston, La.

Fresno State took control of the match in the second half, outshooting Idaho 12-3. DeShane scored when a deflected shot found her foot, and the senior knocked the ball off the left post and into the net.

Blaze ousted in Las Vegas

The Central California Blaze won the program's first elimination game at the 20th annual Las Vegas Fall Desert Classic before losing to the eventual champions in the semifinals.

The Blaze beat the Los Osos Grizzlies 10-2 before falling to the North Las Vegas Rams 10-0.

This is the fourth year the Blaze has played in the tournament. There were 42 teams in this year's field.
