THE BUZZ

Despite the graduation of several key performers -- including reigning Bee Player of the Year Melody Mandelbaum -- two-time defending Central Section Division I champion Clovis West appears to be the class of the field again. The Golden Eagles' only loss this season -- 25-23, 25-20 -- came against Presentation-San Jose, ranked 28th nationally in the ESPN RISE Fab 50, at the Milpitas/Independence Spikefest on Sept. 4. Clovis West finished fifth at that tournament.

Beyond Clovis West, the balance of power lies in Kern County, where Liberty heads up six Bakersfield schools in the Top 10.

Central Valley Christian debuts at No. 5 -- arguably a lofty spot for a Division III school -- based on the strength of its wins over two D-I (Frontier and Garces) and two D-II (Edison and Memorial) opponents.
