THE BUZZ

Yes, the competition's been stiff, but Bullard and Edison, the Central Section's defending D-I and II champions, are a combined 0-4 while being outscored 184-41.

Example No. 732 of the built-in bias against the Central Section, particularly by Cal-Hi Sports, whose rankings have strongly influenced the State Bowl Championships selection committee the past five years: Clovis West, 2-0 and coming off a 47-7 throttling of the state's then-No. 14 Del Oro-Loomis, is ranked No. 21 by Cal-Hi. Yet Crenshaw, 0-2 and coming off a 25-21 loss to previously unranked Norco, is still No. 18 this week. Cal-Hi also has Centennial No. 14 and Buchanan No. 23.

Hanford's Brayden Sanchez no longer has graduated brother Cannon to play catch with, but the Bullpups' junior receiver is doing just fine with new quarterback Robert Ortega. Sanchez, an All-State Sophomore last year, caught five passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-13 win over Monache, and has scored five times in all for a 2-0 team bent on unseating West Yosemite League three-year reigning champion El Diamante.
