Breaking in five new starters from a season ago, defending Central Section Division I boys water polo champ Buchanan finished third at the Millikan Polo Classic on Saturday in Long Beach.
The Bears topped Santa Monica 5-3 in the third-place game, with goals from Tieve Oreizi, Garrett Pickford, Brent Teraoka, Darya Oreizi and Jordan Patterson.
And Buchanan coach Dave Pickford expects the spread-out scoring to continue after the Bears' offense flowed through Kyle Kittlitz as he set school single-season scoring records (125 and 128) the past two seasons.
"The difference between our first guy and our 12th guy is not huge," said Pickford, who is substituting players in six-man waves to keep constant pressure on opponents -- similar to the style employed by ex-Fresno City coach Vance Walberg in basketball. "We don't have one guy who will score eight goals a game."

While Pickford plans to rely on his depth in the field, 6-foot-6 sophomore Taylor Smith has begun to assert himself as the team's primary goalkeeper. Buchanan opens Tri-River Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Clovis North.
Behind MVP Ian Manfredo and top goalie Dominic Catanzarite, Memorial's B team beat Sunnyside 11-8 in the final of the 12-team Fall Kick-Off Classic on Saturday at Fresno High.
